I hesitated on whether or not I should write a post on this book. I was torn between whether I should only write about books I recommend or if I should share about all books I read moving forward. I decided to go ahead and share about all books I read. In case it’s not obvious- I did not love this one! haha
I chose this book because I saw many on social media sharing they were reading it and it seemed like a great summer read. It literally has the word ‘vacation’ in the title. I started it while I was in the keys and it just seemed like the right time to read this book.
Poppy is a social media influencer who eventually lands a job at a magazine called R&R which is about travel. Initially her blog is about how to travel on the cheap. Every summer she takes a big trip with her friend Alex Nilson. Once she lands her job though, the dyanmic of the trips changes. They let you know that Alex and Poppy had some sort of falling out but do not reveal why until later in the book. Poppy should be fulfilled since she has a dream job, however, something is making her unhappy. She realizes she misses her friend Alex so she reaches out to him and they decide to go on a trip together to Palm Springs for Alex’s brother’s wedding.
The best way to describe the book is that it’s predictable. I could have told you how it was going to end almost from the minute I started to read it. I also felt like the author was trying to make Poppy likeable in a quirky way but I found her a little annoying at times. The book jumps back and forth in time. I use the kindle app on my iPhone and iPad for books and it allows for a hybrid between audible and reading the book. I always thought audio books wouldn’t be my thing since books are more enjoyable when you actually read them, however, if I don’t do audio books it would take me 6 months to get through a book! This book jumps back and forth in time. One chapter will be taking place ‘this summer’ and the next will take place 10 summers back, 9 summers back, 8 summers back etc. I think since I was doing audio book for the most part, sometimes I would start listening and it would take me a bit to figure out if we were in present day or going years back.
I’m curious if other people liked this book since it does seem to be popular. It is an easy read and if you can get past the predictability of it and the fact that it’s like a cheesy rom com, I can see why some may like this book. If you are interested in reading it, you can purchase the book here- https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08GQC9P7Q?tag=onamzjen081df-20&linkCode=ic5&ascsubtag=amzn1.infl.us.product&creativeASIN=B08GQC9P7Q&ref=exp_influencer-79a04da4_dp_vv_d. If you’ve read it, let me know what you think! If you did like this book, you will also like ‘Josh and Hazel’s Guide to not Dating‘. I found these books to be very similar and also didn’t love ‘Josh and Hazel’s Guide to not Dating’ for similar reasons as to why I did not love ‘The People We Meet on Vacation’. It was also predictable and Hazel has a very similar personality to Poppy.
Thanks for visiting!
